When Does Your Shopify Store Need a Mobile App?

12 March 2024

Not every Shopify store needs a mobile app. That might sound counterintuitive coming from a company that builds them, but it's the truth. The decision to invest in a native app should be driven by your specific business metrics, not by trends or competitor pressure.

The stores that benefit most from mobile apps share a few characteristics: they have a repeat purchase model, their customers engage frequently (multiple times per month), and they've already optimized their mobile web experience. If customers are buying from you once and never coming back, an app won't fix that. You have a retention problem, not a channel problem.

Where apps truly shine is in re-engagement. Push notifications give you a direct line to customers without competing in a crowded inbox or paying for ads. Brands that get this right see push notification open rates that significantly outperform email. That direct channel, combined with the faster checkout experience of a native app, creates a compounding advantage over time.

The economics also need to make sense. If your average order value is low and your margins are thin, the cost of building and maintaining an app may not generate a positive return for years. But if you have strong unit economics and a loyal customer base, the math usually works in your favor within the first year.

Signs You're Ready

Look at your mobile web traffic. If more than 60% of your visitors are on mobile and you're seeing lower conversion rates on mobile versus desktop, there's revenue being left on the table that a native app experience can capture. The gap between mobile traffic and mobile revenue is the opportunity.

Another indicator is your repeat purchase rate. If a significant portion of your revenue comes from returning customers, an app gives those loyal buyers a faster, more personalized experience that reinforces their habit of buying from you.

Starting the Conversation

The best approach is honest assessment. We've advised plenty of brands to wait, improve their mobile web first, or invest in other channels before considering an app. When the timing is right, the results speak for themselves. When it's premature, you end up with an expensive app that nobody downloads.

If you're curious whether your store is ready, the metrics don't lie. Look at your repeat rate, your mobile traffic share, your customer lifetime value, and your current mobile conversion rate. Those four numbers will tell you most of what you need to know.
